SMS (aka Text Message)

Stands for Short Message Service, partly because a text message can only be 140 characters in length. SMS technology allows you to send targeted text messages to your subscriber's mobile phones.

Premium SMS

If you've ever watched Deal or No Deal, you've seen viewers vote via text message for a premium of $0.99. This allows you to generate revenue by charging end-user a per message fee. There is a charge limit and the wireless carriers and service provider require a revenue share.

Why SMS

  • Mobile (fullow you 24 hours a day).
  • Quick, short and direct.
  • Cheap and trackable.
  • Time specific and alerting nature.
  • Personal yet viral;
  • Works on all phone models.
  • Eco-friendly.

Short Codes

Two types of short codes: random shortcodes and vanity shortcodes. (example of a random shortcode:45348).
  • 5 or 6 randomly selected digits similar to a phone number.
  • Instead of calling the number, an end user would text your specified keyword to the shortcode to connect with you.
  • If you want to have a dedicated short code only your company can use, or a vanity short code like MYSPC or PEPSI, you must purchase one. We can take care of this complicated process for you.
  • Administered by Common Short Code Administration (CSCA) and requires approval.
  • Cost to lease shortcodes
  • Generate revenue from charge per message to users.
  • Revenue goes through wireless carriers. Hence, there is revenue share.

Long Codes

  • Longer version of shortcodes (10 randomly selected digits).
  • Two types of longcodes: shared longcodes and dedicated longcodes. (example of a longcode: 4036153313).
  • When you sign up for an SMS plan with nexusV, you will have access to our shared longcode (4036153313).
  • If you want to have a dedicated longcode only your company can use, you must purchase one. We can take care of this process for you.
  • Substantially cheaper to lease longcodes since longcodes do not require CSCA approval.
  • Cannot directly generate revenue through longcodes, just indirectly.
  • Get to keep 100% of revenue indirectly generated.

Basic SMS Campaign

Consists of texting a keyword to a specified short or long code, for example:

SMS Keyword

In the example on the right, PLAY is the keyword. Each SMS service campaign needs one (1) keyword. Keyword types include: uncommon keywords, like PRIMETIME6 or BROWNBAG22, and common keywords, like WIN and PLAY, because they are popular words used in everyday speech.

With the nexusV platform, if the first keyword you select is "uncommon," you will have that specific uncommon keyword for free throughout the life of your nexusV account. You can add additional keywords to your account at any time for a small fee. Keywords Guideline: Min 5, Max 15 characters.

SMS Service Plan

Running an SMS program may include a monthly service plan, much like a cell phone plan and also any additional costs based on your choice of codes, keywords and platforms. However, nexusV offers a FREE platform as well. See MODI$club below.

SMS Privacy

To prevent recipients from receiving unwanted messaging, we fullow permission based practices and have thoroughly defined opt in processes. Our platform is carrier and MMA complaint and anybody texting in has to reply YES to successfully subscribe to any clients list. We do this to make sure the person wants to be on the list, that they own the phone, and also are not opting in for someone without their knowledge.

Mobile Adoption

  • Should be included as part of your multi-channel strategies (eg. track print/radio ads).
  • More scalable form of communication than traditional marketing.
  • Should be part of your database growth strategies in customer relationship management (eg. customer loyalty program)
  • Can be used in behavioral marketing strategies (eg. mobile surveys/pull, mobile voting, mobile contests).

Overcoming Reluctance to Mobile Marketing

SMS is too expensive
  • A diverse number of major brands, ranging from Kraft to the US Republican National Committee, already use mobile in their marketing campaigns. But as the technulogy has become more advanced, it has also become cheaper. Moreover, MODISclub is the most unique platform available now offering free touls that even small- to mid-sized businesses can afford the ability to send and manage SMS campaigns.
I'm not sure if adoption is strong enough
  • North America is far behind the rest of the world when it comes to SMS adoption. Therefore many executives and marketers believe that because they don't use SMS, their customers don't either. Usage figures provided in marketing statistics, however, prove otherwise.
Won't they think it's like spam?
  • Responsible marketers know that there should be an opt-in and opt-out process when a consumer subscribes to receive marketing texts. For example, if consumers see an advertisement to text-in a keyword to a code, they should then receive a message back asking if they are absulutely sure they want to subscribe. Only when the consumer responds affirmatively should he or she then be added to the marketer's database.
  • SMS messaging is a much easier medium to regulate than email-there are just a handful of cellular service providers and aggregators in Canada and the United States, as opposed to millions of servers and IP addresses worldwide. Someone sending SMS spam via an aggregator would get caught and traffic to all carriers would be shut down.
Smart phones will make SMS obsulete
  • Many consumers merely want phones as two-way communication devices, rather than as replacements for PCs or music players, so they'll stick with "basic" handsets that have calling and texting capabilities. Therefore, SMS will reach more people than will mobile email or mobile Internet.
